Our work system has two parts: the foundation and exercising the Three Circles, of which I will speak about on another occasion.
The foundation, a necessary condition to be part of Grupo Salinas, is comprised of our values, our spirit, and our method.
Today, I would like to speak of our spirit, of the concept of Asabiyah, an Arabic word that synthesizes three elements: (1) group spirit, (2) solidarity, and (3) austerity.
Group spirit: this means that we are all together in the same boat, and if that boat sinks, we will all get wet (in the best case scenario). But if the boat reaches its port of call without any problems, there will be progress both on an individual level as well as for our families. The leaders of Grupo Salinas have the mandate to cultivate and build this group spirit.
Solidarity: this implies that when someone from our group is attacked, has an accident, or simply is going through a difficult period, it is expected that others in the group will come to his or her aid. This concept goes very much in hand with one of our values: generosity. But it is important to keep in mind that generosity begins at home, being generous begins with oneself and then with those around us, our loved ones, our family, our work team, and toward the society of which we are a part. Let’s stay away from the saying: “light in public and dark at home.”
Austerity: Asabiyah is a term of Arabic origin that comes from the Bedouins, and therefore implies austerity. There is no place more austere than the desert, yet the Bedouins live happily and work with enthusiasm. Our businesses are austere because we try to provide the maximum value possible to the clients. We cannot manage our business with excesses or with luxuries because we are not selling Gucci handbags or Prada shoes. Our group proudly aims its operations at the base of the pyramid.
In conclusion, Asabiyah implies a spirit of belonging, solidarity and austerity. The group spirit strengthens us in difficult times, and today, more than ever, we should practice it in on a daily basis.
