The motorcycle, or the ‘bike as many call it, has great potential in Mexico.
With this in mind, we launched barely three years ago our Italika motorcycle line with five employees and sales of 80 motorcycles a month. The mandate was to provide our clients with access to their own means of transportation, which would allow them to be more efficient in their daily activities in a comfortable, reliable, and fun way.
We have since extended our operations to include an assembly plant, Ensamblika, where we plan to produce up to 350,000 motorcycles annually for distribution in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Peru. Today we sell 200,000 units per year, which amounts to half of the motocycles sold in Mexico, and as a result we doubled the size of the market.
Motorcycles are quick and efficient transportation with numerous advantages:
- They consume very little fuel. Energy prices have fallen in the past few weeks due to the global crisis, but once the world resumes the path toward growth -and it will indeed- oil prices will continue to rise, and therefore we will once again value fuel economy.
- Precisely because motorcycles consume little fuel, they emit few greenhouse gases, which cause global warning. The substitution of cars with motorcycles will help mitigate this serious problem, although there are also automobile motors with very low emission levels.
- Since motorcycles are small, they can be driven and easily parked in congested areas. For the same reason, if special infrastructure were to be created for bikes, such as special traffic lanes and parking spaces, they would imply a low cost per user when compared to cars.
- Motorcycles require considerably less investment than cars. With less than 12,000 pesos you can purchase an Itálika.
What can we do to increase use?
One problem is that in Mexico we do not respect bikers. This is also true for cyclists and pedestrians. But to be honest the biker does not respect motorists or pedestrians either. Serious accidents that involve motorcycles are common sights in Mexico. We need to promote road safety.
At Grupo Salinas we are ready to promote campaigns to create a culture of respect by and for the motorcyclist, emphasizing its advantages, but also its risks and the precautions that should be taken -from the use of a helmet to the way that bikes should be driven in the city.
The authorities can also contribute by promoting the use of the motorcycle, creating basic infrastructure, and reducing paperwork for registration.
If we are able to promote the responsible use of the motorcycle, we will have a powerful development tool that will provide urban and rural transportation to visit friends and family, go to school, do business and be more productive.
Given the enormous advantages of motorcycles, it is in all of our best interest to promote and respect its use. In short, get a bike (if it works for you) and be careful.
